Self-proclaimed godman ‘Jalebi Baba’, who was jailed for raping over 100 women, has died

A self-proclaimed godman known as Amarpuri alias ‘Jalebi Baba’, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Fatehabad district court for raping several women (his disciples) and making video clips of the act, died on Tuesday evening. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.

It was reported that “Jalebi Baba” was ill for many days in prison and was undergoing treatment at Agroha Medical College. According to the prison administration, “Jalebi Baba” had chest problems on Tuesday afternoon. From jail, he was first referred to Hisar District Civil Hospital and later to Agroha Medical College.

When his health improved in the evening, he was taken back to prison. “Jalebi Baba” again suffered from chest pain in his barracks at night and was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.

14 years imprisonment

Years ago, he worked as a jalebi seller in Tohana, later became a “Baba” and built an ashram. In October 2017, there was a stir at Jalebi Baba’s ashram in Tohana after objectionable videos of female devotees surfaced.

He came into the national spotlight when over a hundred women accused him of giving them tea laced with intoxicants during treatments and sermons and raping them when they passed out. Later, when the matter was investigated, a huge cache of objectionable material was found in the ashram.

The Fatehabad District Court sentenced him to 14 years in prison on January 10, 2023 for raping a minor. He was lodged in Hisar Central Jail -2.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison each in two rape cases and five years under the IT Act. By order of the court, all sentences were imposed concurrently.
