Death of police dog in Savannah, Missouri, is being investigated by authorities

An investigation is currently underway into the cause of death of a police dog who died on Thursday after his night shift in Savannah, Missouri.

Horus, a German shepherd, joined the force in 2021 at nearly 2 years old, police said. He worked for the Savannah Police Department, about an hour north of Kansas City.

“The entire department would appreciate your thoughts and prayers in regards to the loss of our partner Horus,” Police Chief David Vincent said in a press release.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is conducting a criminal investigation.

The police have not commented publicly on what might have led to the death of the police dog.

“The Andrew County Prosecutor’s Office is deeply saddened by the death of K-9 Horus. We are grateful for his service to our community,” Andrew County Prosecutor Monica J. Morrey said in a statement.

“I will wait for the results of this investigation before making a decision on necessary action,” she added.

Officials said they would wait to announce Horus’ cause of death until the investigation was complete.
