Knife attack in Suzhou an isolated incident: Foreign Ministry spokesman


(ECNS) – The attack that injured two Japanese and one Chinese nationals in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, on Monday was an isolated incident, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Tuesday.

Suzhou police said in a statement on Tuesday that the knife attack took place on Monday afternoon and that the suspect was a 52-year-old unemployed man who was arrested by police on the spot.

According to Mao, the two Japanese citizens and one Chinese citizen were immediately taken to the hospital and received timely treatment. The injuries of the two Japanese citizens are not life-threatening. The wounded Chinese citizen is still being rescued in the hospital. The case is being further investigated.

Mao said it was an unfortunate incident. According to the police’s preliminary assessment, it was an isolated case.

“Such isolated cases could happen in any country in the world. China will continue to take effective measures to protect the safety of all foreigners in China, just as it protects our own citizens,” Mao added.
