Walker County correctional officer arrested for allegedly smuggling items to inmates

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of one of its own. Sheriff Nick Smith posted information on social media that 29-year-old Tony Dewayne Jackson was arrested and charged with promoting third-degree prison contraband. Jackson was a correctional officer and Sheriff Smith said they believe Jackson was providing non-drug contraband to inmates at the correctional facility. “Contraband of any kind undermines the safety protocols and security measures we have in place,” Sheriff Smith said. “Items such as cell phones, weapons and other unauthorized materials can facilitate criminal activity, endanger lives and disrupt the rehabilitation process. We take these violations very seriously and will continue to take strong measures to prevent such activity.” The sheriff said more charges could be brought against Jackson if new evidence emerges and that Jackson is no longer employed by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Jackson was a correctional officer and Sheriff Smith said they believed Jackson was providing non-drug-related contraband to correctional inmates.

“Contraband of any kind undermines the safety protocols and security measures we have in place,” said Sheriff Smith. “Items such as cell phones, weapons and other unauthorized materials can facilitate criminal activity, endanger lives and disrupt the rehabilitation process. We take these violations very seriously and will continue to take strict measures to prevent such activities.”

The sheriff said that as new evidence emerges, additional charges may be filed against Jackson and that Jackson is no longer employed by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.
