Westview coach suspended after incident at football camp

Jamal Jones, head coach of the Westview High School football team, is also a police officer with the Hillsboro Police Department, where he is currently on leave “pending the outcome of the investigation.”

PORTLAND, Oregon – Westview High School football head coach Jamal Jones is accused of waking up players on his team by shaking and hitting them early in the morning during a multi-day football camp on the campus of Linfield University.

At around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, McMinnville police arrived to conduct a “welfare check” on the campus, which was hosting several high school football teams as part of the camp. Police did not release the name of the accused coach, but said he was also a police officer with the Hillsboro Police Department, adding that the case was being investigated to determine if any criminal activity occurred.

The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) lists Jamal Jones as the head coach of Westview’s football program. The Beaverton School District confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Jones has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Hillsboro police said they were aware of the allegations against one of their officers, who was “not acting in the capacity of a Hillsboro employee” at the time. Police said the employee was “on leave” pending investigation of the incident.

This was Jones’ first year as head coach of the Westview football team. He previously served as head coach at Franklin High School in Portland and Arcata High School in California, where he was head coach for six years, according to the Westview High School website.

The McMinnville Police Department is asking anyone with direct knowledge of the incident who has not already been contacted to please contact the McMinnville Police Department either through the front office at 503-434-7307 or the non-emergency number 503-434-6500. The reference number is 24MP2141.
