Record heat in metro Atlanta on Wednesday in 2024

If we set a new record, it could be the first 100-degree day for the city since 2019.

ATLANTA — Wednesday will be the hottest day of the year so far for the Atlanta area. The 11Alive Weather Team is forecasting a high temperature of 99 degrees Wednesday afternoon at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

It comes as the city enters the seventh day of the current heatwave, which shows no signs of ending over the next week.

If we reach 99 degrees, it would tie the daily record from 1948. If we exceed the record and reach 100, it would be our first 100 degree day since August 2019.

Other places around North Georgia could reach 100 degrees on Wednesday, including Peachtree City and Eatonton.

The heatwave will last until the weekend and beyond.

We will see changes in humidity. So far, low humidity has kept our heat indexes from reaching heat advisory criteria at 105 degrees or higher. As dew points push us into a more tropical air mass this weekend, temperatures felt will be warmer than actual temperatures outside.

The dangers of heat

As we weather this heatwave, it’s a good idea to think daily about the impact heat can have on our bodies. Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States each year. In 2023, heat caused 207 deaths, according to National Weather Service data.

This month’s heat: in perspective

Through Tuesday, Atlanta had 14 days of 90 degrees or higher this year. It’s only the beginning of summer and we’re expecting warmer than average temperatures at the end of the month and beginning of July. On average, we see 47 days a year in the 90s+. The record stands at 91 days as of 2019.

The entire second half of June was very hot. This pushed our average temperature for the month (so far) up to 80.6 degrees, making it the eighth warmest June on record. With more warm days ahead, we could see our place rise in the rankings.
