An Italian tourist is said to have been sexually abused in Cairns. The defendant is 10 years old

A 10-year-old boy has been charged with sexually assaulting an Italian tourist in a Far North Queensland holiday hotspot.
The 24-year-old woman was also allegedly attacked by a group of youths in the Cairns CBD as she tried to raise the alarm on Wednesday morning.
“It sounds like a very disturbing story,” Queensland Premier Steven Miles told reporters on Thursday.
“As far as I know, the police acted quickly and arrested the alleged perpetrator.”
Police said the woman was walking past the boy in Cairns city center when he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

She called police before the 10-year-old attacked her along with three other teens, police said.

The woman suffered minor bruises and scratches on her head and face.
“Undoubtedly a traumatic experience for the young lady,” Detective Inspector Kevin Goan told reporters.
“The young age of the perpetrators is disgusting. People have the right to conduct their business in our community.”
Officers responded to a report of an assault at the corner of Lake and Shields streets after 10 a.m., police said.
The boy was arrested “within minutes” along with three other teenagers, all four of whom were known to the police.
The 10-year-old was accused of sexual assault, common assault and assault in society.

Police said no one else had been charged but the investigation was continuing.
