1 dead in Gaston County when tree falls on vehicle

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — One person was killed and another was rescued after a tree fell on a vehicle during severe weather in Gaston County Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

County officials declared a state of emergency after a powerful storm that damaged buildings and downed trees and power lines.

According to poweroutage.us, more than 39,000 customers in Gaston County and over 49,000 in Mecklenburg County were without power around 9:20 p.m.

One person was killed and another was rescued by New Hope Fire Department crews after a tree fell on a vehicle, the county said. The survivor was taken to a hospital.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for portions of Gaston, Cleveland and Lincoln counties Wednesday afternoon.

The western part of Gaston County, Gastonia and other communities sustained significant damage, the county said.

“We are working as quickly as possible to ensure our residents are safe and downed trees and debris are removed from roads so energy crews can work to restore power,” said Chad Brown, chairman of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners.

The American Red Cross said it would open an emergency shelter Wednesday evening at 519 W. Franklin Blvd. to open. in Gastonia.
