Houston Mayor Calls Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s Fiancé a Nerd

Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s Facebook comment about Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s fiancé put him in a sticky situation with some criticism on social media. Hidalgo shared moments from her bridal shower on the platform, which sparked a plethora of comments, including one from Whitmire.

“Wonderful,” Whitmire wrote. “He really looks like a nerd.”

The now-deleted comment referred to Hidalgo’s fiancé seen in photos capturing the couple’s bridal shower tea party.

Social media users, including journalist Scott Braddock, shared screenshots of the post.

The Chronicle previously reported Hidalgo’s engagement to her longtime boyfriend, David James, a 35-year-old personal injury and civil rights attorney.

“I am so grateful to everyone who celebrated with me,” Hidalgo wrote. “I felt so loved and it was truly one of the happiest days of my life.”

Despite Whitmire’s remarks, most commenters on the post congratulated the happy couple and offered their best wishes to the soon-to-be-married duo.

“Congratulations,” wrote Maria Sandoval. “You look beautiful. Many good wishes to you and your new husband.

Whitmire and Hidalgo’s offices did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
