Mooresville Police Chief given expanded role in city

Ron Campurciani will continue to serve as Mooresville Police Chief in addition to his new responsibilities.

MOORESVILLE, NC — Mooresville Police Chief Ron Campurciani was recently named deputy city manager, Mooresville authorities announced this week.

Campurciani will continue to serve as Mooresville’s police chief, a position he has held since 2019. He will assume leadership of E-911 communications, construction, permits and inspections, and facilities and asset management. He began his new duties on Monday, June 24, according to a news release.

Mayor Chris Carney said Campurciani’s strong leadership was the main factor in the decision.

“He is an asset to our community and our police department,” Carney said in a statement. “Handing him the reins in other areas of local government only made sense. I look forward to all the good work he will continue to do for our city and the people who live here.”

Campurciani has been in law enforcement for more than 35 years. Before joining the Mooresville Police Department, he served as police chief in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Last October, he was elected vice chairman of the executive committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

“The City of Mooresville is moving forward together, improving our processes, shaping our culture and developing our people,” said City Manager Tracey Jerome. “Chief Campurciani has initiated fundamental change at the Mooresville Police Department and I am confident that in his expanded leadership role he will continue to deliver exceptional results for our organization and our community.”

Campurciani was appointed permanent Mooresville police chief in December 2019. Former police chief Damon Williams was placed on leave shortly after Officer Jordan Sheldon’s death. He resigned a week after WCNC’s Sarah French interviewed Charlotte Sheldon’s family. The department was under investigation over allegations of a hostile work environment.
