Chalmette High School principal to undergo surgery after being attacked by man in wheelchair, sheriff’s office says

The sheriff’s office said Wayne Warner saw the man knocking over trash cans and stopped to ask if he could help when the man pushed him to the ground.

CHALMETTE, Louisiana — The longtime principal of Chalmette High School suffered injuries that will require surgery after he was attacked Sunday by a man in a wheelchair he was trying to help, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Wayne Warner, who has been principal of Chalmette High School for 51 years, told the sheriff’s office he was driving down Palmetto Street when he saw the man knocking over trash cans and mailboxes. He stopped to see if he could help and the man became angry and pushed him to the ground.

The sheriff’s office said Warner was hospitalized and required surgery for his injuries. A Facebook post by his wife said Warner broke his hip and elbow.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Christopher Kidd, was identified, arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, simple assault on a sick person, simple assault, shoplifting, resisting a police officer and assault on a police officer.

Kidd apparently resisted when officers tried to arrest him.
