Dangerous heat and humidity ahead of Wednesday’s storms

(KFVS) – Heat advisories are in effect for the Heartland today from noon to 8 p.m.

High temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses.

Bright sunshine and southwest winds cause it to heat up very quickly, with official maximum temperatures in the afternoon being around 35 to 37 degrees.

Dew points will rise above 70, giving us a calculated heat index value of around 105 to 110 degrees by the afternoon.

Today will be the hottest day of 2024 so far.

There is also a slight, but not entirely excluded, risk of severe thunderstorms from this afternoon into the evening.

The greatest risk is in our northern counties in southern Illinois.

In the rest of the Heartland, thunderstorm chances increase overnight into Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region.

The timing for storms is tricky, with some models predicting mostly dry conditions after Wednesday afternoon.

A low risk (level 1 of 5) is forecast for most of the Heartland from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The SPC has forecast a threat level of 1 out of 5 for severe storms for the Heartland on Wednesday.

The good news is that the front will cool temperatures a bit and it will be less humid for a few days before it warms up again on Saturday.

Another cold front could bring more storms late Saturday or into Saturday night, with further rapid cooling possible directly behind the front.
