2 dead after police chase and accident with stolen car in Portland

Gresham police officers attempted to stop the vehicle shortly after midnight Tuesday near Southeast 159th Avenue and Southeast Division Street.

PORTLAND, Oregon – Two people died early Tuesday morning after they led police officers on a chase and then crashed a stolen vehicle, Portland police said. Two others involved in the crash were injured.

Gresham police officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of ​​Southeast 159th Avenue and Southeast Division Street shortly after midnight. The vehicle failed to stop and minutes later Gresham police officers found the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Southeast 139th Avenue and Southeast Division Street, Portland police said.

Additional officers from the East Precinct responded and found the vehicle had collided with another vehicle and a power pole, knocking out power to residents. Officers found two men dead inside the vehicle and another man with serious injuries, Portland police said. That man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Portland police learned that the vehicle the men were in had been reported stolen.

The driver of the other vehicle, a woman, suffered minor injuries.

Portland Police have not yet identified the people involved in the fatal accident.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crash Team is investigating. Southeast Division Street will be closed between Southeast 136th Avenue and Southeast 142nd Avenue during the investigation.
