Girardville City Council votes to suspend police until 2024

The Girardville County Council has voted to suspend operations of the county police department for the remainder of 2024.

The move follows a thorough review of resident feedback and financial implications.

Last month, Mayor Michael Zangari initiated a community survey to gauge public opinion on the future of law enforcement in Girardville. Among the 36 residents who took part, 89% expressed support for suspending local police, advocating for cuts in funding and reliance on coverage from outside agencies.

Mayor Zangari agreed with the 89% and suggested the suspension to the council. The proposal was unanimously approved by the council members present.

Mayor Zangari outlined plans for ongoing discussions with neighboring police departments to negotiate coverage costs and consultations with the district attorney to prepare for a possible dissolution of the police department. He committed to regularly updating the Council on the progress of these initiatives.

In view of the suspension, Mayor Zangari discouraged residents of the district from contacting the district office regarding police matters and referred inquiries to the relevant external authorities.

Additionally, arrangements are being made with the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Office and the Pennsylvania State Police to process evidence previously in the possession of the Girardville Police Department.

Also accepted at the council meeting were the resignations of police officers Brandon Gonzalez and James Patterson, effective immediately.
