NTSB returns to East Palestine to clarify results of train derailment investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board returns to East Palestine today for a meeting to discuss the investigation into the devastating train derailment in 2023 and make recommendations to prevent similar disasters in the future.

You can watch the meeting, which begins at 9:30 a.m., on the NTSB’s YouTube page or follow the Akron Beacon Journal’s live coverage here.

Today’s hearing will present the final findings of the NTSB investigation and possible recommendations to improve rail safety.

While the NTSB’s recommendations would not be binding, U.S. lawmakers could take action to enforce them.

What happened in the train derailment in Eastern Palestine?

It’s been more than a year since a Norfolk Southern train derailed on the tracks that run through the center of this small Ohio town near the Pennsylvania border. Residents initially watched the fires from the accident and were later evacuated as officials feared a possible dangerous chemical explosion.
