Cattle euthanized after trailer accident in Kansas

LYON COUNTY – Cattle had to be euthanized after a trailer accident shortly before 10 a.m. Monday in northern Lyon County.

A 1998 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Thomas Romano of New York was transporting 123 cows on U.S. 56 in Lyon County, according to Deputy Sheriff Fernando Zuniga.

Romano attempted to turn right onto Road K. The rear passenger axle fell into the ditch, preventing the semi from moving. A local farmer attempted to pull the vehicle out with a tractor, but was unsuccessful and the trailer tipped over onto its right side.

According to Zuniga, about 19 cows had to be euthanized on site. There were no other injuries.
