After three dead puppies were left in a shoebox in Newport, a fundraising appeal was launched.

The RSPCA said the puppies were of an unknown breed and were found by a citizen.

The three black puppies were found around 11am on Friday near an entrance to St Julian’s Park nature reserve, known locally as Purnell’s Farm.

A citizen came across them across from the playground on Renoir Road.

They were in a black shoebox and wrapped in a blue sweater.

Danielle Wilson, RSPCA animal rescue officer, described the outcome of the incident as “very sad” and thanked the citizen who raised the alarm.

“These three puppies still had their umbilical cords attached, so they couldn’t have been that old,” she said.

“We don’t know if they died at birth and someone just didn’t know what to do with the bodies, or if they died afterwards.

“We are checking the CCTV in the area and I have put up a poster on site to get information.”

The RSPCA is urging anyone with first-hand information about the incident to contact the hotline.
