Roseburg police arrested a man early Monday for an alleged assault.

According to an RPD report, officers responded to the parking garage in the 500 block of Southeast Rose Street at 1:00 a.m. A caller reported a man was chasing two people and attacking one person with a stick. Officers learned that a victim was walking past the older Rite Aid location when 55-year-old Arturo Meza cursed at him and chased him with a sharp stick.

The victim ran toward the parking garage, where Meza allegedly began chasing a second victim. Meza caught up to the second victim and allegedly struck him twice in the stomach and once in the back with the stick before the victim was able to run away. This victim was left with a five-inch welt below his belly button. He was taken to CHI Mercy Medical Center for his injuries. Meza was described as irrational and confrontational during the incident.

Meza was charged with fourth-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree disturbing the peace and violation of probation. He was held without bail.
