Skanska signs $49 million contract to dismantle Atlanta station canopy

Skanska signed a first contract with MARTA, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, to dismantle the canopy above the largest train station in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Swedish construction company said the contract to deconstruct the canopy of the 45-year-old MARTA Five Points station is worth $49 million, or about SEK 500 million, which will be included in the second quarter 2024.

The contract includes the deconstruction of the existing 0.5 ace Brutalist prestressed concrete canopy and the demolition of the plaza to make way for a new open-plan solid wood canopy with new pedestrian entrances.

Five Points Station is the largest and busiest rail station in the MARTA system, and the connecting point for all rail lines and eight bus lines throughout Atlanta.

Skanska said deconstruction is expected to begin in July 2024 and be completed in 2026, when Atlanta will be one of 16 cities that will host the FIFA World Cup to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada .
