Idaho man found dead in canyon south of Pocatello

POCATELLO Authorities in Idaho said the body of a 49-year-old man was found in Blackrock Canyon south of Pocatello on Monday.

According to a news release from the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the man was identified as Steven Smith of Pocatello. The news release goes on to say that the death is believed to be medically related, but that will be determined after an investigation. Police said no foul play is suspected.

Authorities believe Smith went into the canyon on Saturday morning to investigate a wrecked ATV from a week ago. Several hours later, his friends went into the canyon to check on him and found him dead, the news release said.

The incident was first reported to emergency services on Sunday at around 7:30 p.m.

Search and rescue teams found Smith about a mile from the Blackrock Canyon Trailhead. Due to steep terrain and poor visibility, teams waited until Monday morning to recover the body.

By midday, rescue workers were able to safely recover the body.

“I want to thank our dedicated volunteers on the search and rescue teams and backcountry rescue teams for dropping everything to help when one of our neighbors is in need. Their efforts are truly appreciated,” said Bannock County Sheriff Tony Manu.
