Hazardous goods incident: Chlorine leak in Bethanien contained | Top Stories

BETHANY, Ill. (WAND) – The Decatur Fire Department assisted the Bethany Police Department and operators of the Bethany Water Treatment Plant with a hazardous materials situation Monday morning.

According to Decatur Fire, crews were called to the 800 block of Robinson St. in Bethany around 11:18 a.m. for a reported chlorine leak.

Decatur’s HAZMAT team of ten technicians arrived on site to repair the dangerous leak.

According to official information, rescue workers entered the scene of the accident wearing fully-encased Level A protective suits to mark the danger zones.

Two teams of two employees each were required to successfully contain and repair the chlorine leak.

The teams managed to defuse the incident without further escalation.
