The driver and his passenger who were in a stolen car involved in a shooting incident in Hartford earlier in the day were arrested in West Hartford Monday afternoon after the car was traveling on flat tires after running over stop bars set up by West Hartford police and collided with a school bus near the intersection of Farmington Avenue and Trout Brook Drive.

West Hartford Police Captain Daniel Moffo said police were notified Monday morning to be on the lookout for a stolen car, a Kia Sportage, that was involved in a shooting incident in Hartford.

Officers located the vehicle in West Hartford and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to comply and gave chase.

Moffo said emergency crews successfully deployed a tire pressure valve that flattened the tires, but the vehicle continued to fly until it came to rest near the intersection of Farmington Avenue and Trout Brook Drive after colliding with a school bus. The driver of the Kia and a passenger – who sustained non-life-threatening injuries – were arrested by West Hartford police at the scene.

According to police, the school bus was empty except for the driver, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Both the driver and passenger of the Kia were turned over to Hartford police and members of an associated task force, Moffo said. Their names were not released and We-Ha.com has reached out to Hartford police for additional details, which were not immediately available.

The intersection of Trout Brook Drive and Farmington Avenue was closed for several hours for investigation and cleanup at the scene, but was reopened to traffic shortly before 7 p.m.

A resident of the neighborhood near Duffy Elementary School said she was outside with her children when she heard sirens and then saw the Kia speed through the area near Belcrest Road, Westminster Drive and Chapman Road, pursued by police. Westminster ends at Rockledge Golf Course and the witness said the driver of the Kia braked when they reached the end of the road and drove across a lawn to continue fleeing.

The witness showed some photos of tire tracks on a lawn and of a sniffer dog unit searching for objects that may have been thrown out of the vehicle’s windows during the escape.

“The WHPD strives to apprehend individuals who pose an immediate threat to our community members in the safest way possible,” Moffo said. “Incidents like this remind us how valuable partnerships between WHPD and HPD members can be. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
