19-year-old passenger killed, driver seriously injured in rollover accident in Otay Mesa

OTAY MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – A 19-year-old driver was seriously injured and his 19-year-old passenger died in a rollover crash on State Route 905 overnight.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 19-year-old man from National City was driving a BMW 435i eastbound on SR-905, west of Heritage Road in Otay Mesa, shortly after midnight Monday night.


CHP reports that the BMW left the roadway at 12:03 a.m. and struck a guardrail. The car then rolled several times down an embankment. Both the driver and the passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by rescue workers.

The 19-year-old male passenger in the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. The driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to the CHP, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the accident and there were no traffic disruptions.

The passenger’s name is being withheld pending family notification from the San Diego County Coroner’s Office.

The accident is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in the San Diego area.
