Green politician attacked in Dresden is a local council candidate

A German Green Party politician attacked in Dresden on Tuesday evening has been identified as Yvonne Mosler, a 47-year-old candidate for Dresden city council, the party announced on Wednesday.

According to the police, Mosler and her Green Party colleague Cornelius Sternkopf were campaigning in the eastern part of the city and hanging political posters when she was attacked by two people.

The Green Party politicians were also accompanied by reporters from Deutsche Welle and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Police said the 34-year-old male suspect pushed the politician aside, insulted and threatened her at around 6:50 p.m. (16:50 GMT) on Tuesday evening.

He is also said to have torn down two election posters.

According to police, a second suspect, a 24-year-old woman, took part in the attack and spat at the politician.

Officials confronted both suspects on Tuesday evening in the immediate vicinity of the attack.
