85-year-old woman identified in fatal dog attack in Monte Alto

MONTE ALTO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hidalgo County investigators have identified the woman killed in a dog attack in Monte Alto.

Geronima Florez, 85, was killed Friday night after one of her dogs attacked her, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.


Investigators say Florez went outside to feed the dogs when the attack happened. When officers arrived in the 22,000 block of Jesus Flores Road, they found the woman with bleeding marks on her neck and the left side of her head.

The dog that attacked Florez was a black pit bull mix that was shot by Florez’s brother with a shotgun, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators also determined that the black pit bull was the only dog ​​involved in the attack.

The second dog was rescued by animal control.
