San Angelo man dies after nighttime knife attack, 1 person arrested

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo man died on the night of June 23 after being stabbed to death in a home that had been mistakenly broken into, the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office said.

TGSO is currently investigating the death of 23-year-old Layne Lubke, who was killed in a stabbing attack in the 1200 block of Vines Road in Tom Green County.

The sheriff’s office said officers were called to a residence in the area around 11:53 p.m. in search of a stabbing victim. When they arrived at the scene, officers found Lubke in the backyard of the property.

Lubke had suffered a stab wound to the upper left chest area and left abdomen area. A second person, identified as 24-year-old Shae Shepherd, attempted to apply direct pressure to Lubke’s wounds.

Lubke was taken by ambulance to Shannon Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed that Lubke and Shepherd spent the afternoon of June 23 drinking at bars in San Angelo. Shepherd’s girlfriend called the couple back to the property and claimed she heard gunshots in the area and then the sound of a break-in at her home.

When he arrived at the residence, Shepherd armed himself with a pocket knife and walked to the rear of the property where he encountered Lubke coming from the other direction. Shepherd was confused and obviously under the influence of alcohol. He stabbed Lubke, killing him.

Investigators found no evidence of an intruder in the apartment.

Shepherd was arrested for manslaughter and booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center at 6:55 a.m. on Monday, June 24. No bail has been set as of this publication.

The TGSO’s investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact Criminal Investigation at (325)-655-8111.
