Colorado Bureau of Investigation identifies victim in Lake Pueblo double murder

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has identified the two victims of the June 21 double homicide in Pueblo State Park as 29-year-old Dustyn Courtney and 20-year-old Trevion Lucas.

According to the CBI, Courtney and Lucas, both residents of Pueblo, were shot by an unidentified male suspect near Sailboard Beach shortly after midnight. Officials say it appears Courtney got into an argument with the suspect before a physical altercation ensued. The argument ended with the suspect pulling out a gun and shooting Courtney.

CBI officials added that Trevion Lucas did not appear to be involved in the original altercation and that an investigation into the reasons for the fatal shooting of him is ongoing.

Witnesses told the CBI that the suspect fled the park and was still on the run. The shooting occurred on the north side of the lake, not far from the dam, where a group was fishing from the shore.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office are assisting the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has assumed the lead agency in this case.

CBI agents continue to interview witnesses in the hope of identifying the suspect.

Autopsies on both victims are scheduled for tomorrow in Pueblo County.

Sailboat Beach reopened on Saturday afternoon, June 22, 2024. The rest of the park, as well as its campgrounds and marinas, remained open.
