Deputy suspected of kidnapping and sexually abusing woman

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy suspected of sexually assaulting a woman was released from custody Monday on $1 million bail.

Deputy Alexander Ravy Vanny, 33, of Hemet, was arrested Saturday and booked into Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of rape, kidnapping for the purpose of rape and forced oral sex.

Vanny posted bail on Sunday morning.

On Friday, according to Sheriff Sergeant Mike Kelleher, a woman identified only as a volunteer with the sheriff’s department “confided in a deputy and told him about a sexual assault” that occurred on an unspecified date. Kelleher claimed the victim identified Vanny as her attacker, but did not provide any further details.

The deputy who received the information reported it to his superiors, which led to an investigation by the sheriff’s Special Victims Unit, which concluded that “Vanny had committed a sexual assault on the victim,” the sergeant claimed.

The suspect was arrested without incident on Acacia Avenue in Hemet on Saturday afternoon.
