Larry Neuman, retired Chicago police officer, killed in front of his home

A “person of interest” has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a retired Chicago police officer.

Larry Neuman, an explosives technician, was shot and killed outside his West Garfield Park residence around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Chicago police and NBC Chicago said.

The Chicago ATF, the Chicago FBI and the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation are each offering $25,000 for information leading to an arrest or conviction in this case.

A Chicago police spokesman told USA TODAY on Monday that “a suspect is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.”

Footage shows suspects police say are linked to Neuman’s murder

Chicago police released a video showing two people who may be connected to the 73-year-old’s death.

The camera filmed the people walking down an alley dressed in black hoodies.

According to ABC7, police said the suspects could be between 16 and 21 years old.

Police have not confirmed whether the person currently in custody is the same person seen in the footage.

Community members held a march in honor of Neuman: “Father figure”

Local media reported that community members gathered on Sunday to pay their final respects to Neuman, the city’s longest-serving bomb technician.

“Larry Neuman was a pillar of the community who dedicated his life to protecting and supporting others,” Chicago police said in a statement. “Even after leaving the CPD, he continued to work to create safe spaces for the residents and youth of his community.”

In addition to his nearly 30 years of law enforcement service, Neuman was also an ordained minister at St. Michael Missionary Baptist Church, NBC Chicago reported. He also served in the Vietnam War.

His relatives remember him as someone who also helped his community.
