Protest against suspension of five students of Hyderabad University | News from Hyderabad

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) Students’ Union held a protest rally here on Monday demanding the lifting of the suspension of five students who had protested outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence on the campus in May.

Following a call from the student union, some students gathered in front of the university’s administration building and staged a protest, demanding the lifting of the suspension of the five students and the charges filed against them, as well as the imposition of fines on five other students.

The university administration had earlier suspended five students, including the student union president, for one semester and fined five other students Rs 10,000 each after they took part in a protest outside the vice-chancellor’s residence on campus on May 18.

The protest was against the postponement of the student festival ‘Sukoon-2024’. The University of Hyderabad (UoH) administration had issued an order in May asking the union to conduct Sukoon-2024 (which was originally scheduled during the vacation season) during the university’s academic session (in August) and not during the vacation.

“In addition, the Model Code of Conduct during the parliamentary elections was in force until June 4 and the law enforcement agencies had also issued 13 guidelines for the conduct of this festival,” the UoH said in a press release.

However, the Students’ Union barged into the Vice-Chancellor’s house at 1:00 am on May 18 without any prior notice and prevented the Vice-Chancellor and his family members from leaving the house. The Vice-Chancellor and the UoH administration had also alerted the police and subsequently a case was registered in this connection too.

A UoH official said on Monday that the students’ union’s request would be presented at the university’s executive council meeting on June 28 for a decision. However, students protested today.

The suspension will take effect from July 1, the official added.
