Houston Texans: Stefon Diggs arrival could lead to release of former Super Bowl champion WR via trade

The Houston Texans have made it clear that they aren’t going to mess around in 2024. This team means business and the fact that they traded for All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills is testament to that.

The arrival of Diggs, however, only means that the Texans will have to make room for their new star receiver.

The man who seems destined to stay on the outside looking in is former Super Bowl champion Robert Woods. The veteran played his first season in Houston last season, which NFL analyst Matt Holder of Bleacher Report said could be his last:

“After acquiring Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills, Woods likely won’t have much of a role in Houston’s offense this season. He’s also entering a contract year, so it would be wise to see what the team can get him. The return for the 32-year-old probably won’t be big, but something is better than nothing,” Holder suggested.

Years: Accomplishments 2020-23: Had the best four-year stretch at the position in Bills history, and it’s definitely not close. “Has been a Pro Bowler all four years, was first-team All-Pro in 2020 and second-team in 2022.” On a team that only had one 100-catch season (Eric Moulds) , he’s done it all four years he’s been here, including a team-high 127 in 2020. “He’s already fourth in team history in catches (445), yards (5,372) and touchdowns (37) and is third. in 100-yard games (21). “His 11 touchdowns in 2022 are tied for the single-season team record with Bill Brooks.

This makes a lot of sense. As Holder points out, the Texans won’t get a major payoff for Woods, but the 32-year-old still has some value. Several teams need additional depth at the wide receiver position, and they could show interest in an established player such as Woods.

Houston will need to temper its expectations, however, but as Holder stated above, trading Woods now would be more beneficial to the team than losing him for nothing in free agency next year.
