Trump faces abortion attacks on anniversary of Roe v. Wade ruling as he and Biden prepare for debate: Live updates

Trump urges Christian supporters not to vote in 2028

On the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump was attacked by Joe Biden for his stance on abortion access.

The Biden team has launched a new ad featuring a Louisiana woman describing how she was denied access to two emergency rooms while suffering a miscarriage. She comments that Trump “believes he should not be held accountable for his own criminal actions, but he allows women and doctors to be punished.”

Trump and Biden are currently preparing to face off later this week in their first prime-time televised presidential debate of 2024. The president is taking time off at Camp David in Maryland to prepare.

The Republican is meanwhile on the campaign trail. At a conference in Washington DC at the weekend, he gave a vigorous and witty speech asking conservative Christians to vote for him. In Philadelphia, he told a crowd that his trademark long-winded speeches during public addresses were a sign of genius.

At the event in Washington, DC, Trump boasted about promoting a UFC league for migrants, claimed he had suffered “more wounds” than any other president and spouted his now usual, if bizarre, anecdotes about sharks, batteries and Hannibal Lecter.

Trump, an accused adulterer, professes “love” for the Ten Commandments

In an all-caps post on his social media platform Truth Social late last night, the Republican declared his “love” for the Ten Commandments and called for them to be displayed in schools and “many other places.”

Trump’s post came after Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a law last week requiring the biblical code of conduct to be posted in all public classrooms in his state, a law that is being challenged in court.

In elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and state universities, posters must be displayed that are at least 28 x 35 centimeters in size. The commandments must be “the center of the poster” and printed “in large, legible font,” the law states.

Louisiana is the only state in the country with such a regulation, but Trump has indicated that he would like to see this rule changed.

Trump wants you to vote early. But he can’t stop lying about elections

Republicans want you to vote early or vote by mail.

He also believes that postal voting is irreparably corrupt and should be banned.

Here is Alex Woodward on a pretty classic example of Trump’s doublethink.

Former First Lady Melania Trump continues to stay out of the public eye

After Melania Trump missed key events related to her husband’s presidential bid earlier this year – from the kickoff of the 2024 election in Iowa to Trump’s victory party on Super Tuesday – reporters asked the former first lady if she planned to campaign.

Your answer? “Stay tuned.”

But since making that remark in March after she and Trump voted in the Florida primary, Melania Trump has largely avoided public appearances.

The few exceptions included a few fundraisers in April and her son’s high school graduation.

It was striking that the former First Lady did not accompany the likely Republican presidential candidate on a single day of his month-long hush money trial in New York.

She was not present at the sentencing hearing last month or at his remarks at Trump Tower the following day.

She also did not appear at a party organized by Trump’s fan club on June 14 for his 78th birthday, nor at any of his campaign events in recent months.

Trump campaign withdraws green card plan for all foreign graduates

The Republican campaign team is thus retracting a promise made by the former president to automatically issue a green card to all foreign students studying in the United States upon graduation.

Speaking of The All-In Podcast On Thursday, Trump said: “What I want to do and what I will do is that when you graduate from college, I believe you should automatically get a green card as part of your diploma to be able to stay in this country.”

Trump also clarified that this move would not only apply to graduates of four-year universities.

“This also applies to junior colleges. Anyone who graduates from college stays there for two or four years. If you get your degree there or get a doctorate, you should be able to stay in this country.”

After the idea met with immediate resistance, the campaign is now emphasizing a rigorous vetting process as part of its plan.

Here is Oliver O’Connell‘s report.

Trump’s spiritual adviser said he asked her what God thought about the presidential candidacy

Televangelist Paula White-Cain claimed that Trump asked her for God’s opinion on his candidacy for the presidency.

White-Cain, who previously served as Trump’s spiritual adviser and chaired the Evangelical Advisory Council during his presidency in 2016, made the remarks during the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority” conference at the Washington Hilton. She told the audience that her first conversation with the former president occurred long before he had even begun thinking about politics.

Martha McHardy has further details.

Biden attacks Trump with new abortion ad on second anniversary of Roe v. Wade overturn

The 30-second commercial, titled “Criminal Actions,” features testimony from Kaitlyn Joshua, a Louisiana woman who says she was turned away from two emergency rooms when she suffered a miscarriage at 11 weeks’ pregnancy.

Joshua describes her ordeal as “a direct result of Donald Trump’s overturning of Roe v. Wade” and attacks the Republican presidential candidate as a convicted felon, adding that he “believes he should not be held accountable for his own criminal actions, but he will allow women and doctors to be punished.”
