Army builds suspension bridge in 48 hours in rain-hit North Sikkim | India News

The Indian Army said on Monday that its force had constructed a pedestrian suspension bridge in less than 48 hours to reconnect border villages in northern Sikkim that were hit by heavy rains and landslides that killed six people earlier this month.

In a suspension bridge, the roadway is suspended from cables that usually run over towers and are securely anchored at the ends.

“Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps engineers have constructed a 150-foot-long suspension bridge in North Sikkim to reconnect the border villages cut off from the outside world due to persistent heavy rains and provide respite to the locals,” the Indian Army said in a statement.

The pedestrian suspension bridge over a stream, built in less than 48 hours, will restore the connection to the border villages and facilitate the transport of people and relief supplies, it said.

Mangan district in North Sikkim was hit by torrential rains on June 13, destroying road links and communication infrastructure. As a result, around 1,500 tourists were stranded for nearly a week.
