Orelvis Martinez banned for 80 games for doping violation

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been suspended for 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s doping policy.

The 22-year-old Dominican native, who made his major league debut just last Friday, tested positive for clomiphene, a fertility drug that is one of MLB’s banned performance-enhancing substances.

In a statement, Martinez revealed that he was prescribed the clomiphene drug Rejun 50 by a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic. He had been undergoing treatment since 2020 to start a family with his girlfriend.

“I made a mistake in my attempt to start a family,” Martinez said. “With that in mind, I take full responsibility for my negligence and accept my suspension.”
