Houstonians react to Chief Finner’s retirement

Troy Finner’s commitment to community policing is what those who call Houston home say they want to see in the city’s next public safety leader.

HOUSTON — News of Houston Police Chief Troy Finner’s abrupt retirement came as a surprise to some while others believe it was political.

“The first thing I thought was the new mayor wanted a new police chief,” said Reginald Joiner, a Houston resident.

“It was very much part of that political scene,” said Sharon Evans-Brooks, who lives in Houston’s Third Ward.

As the circumstances surrounding his departure have been resolved, many have reflected on the legacy he left behind.

“Say what can be said about Chief Finner, he and his commanders have done an incredible job building relationships with communities so we can be partners in what is most important,” Evans-Brooks said.

Less than a month ago, Evans-Brooks took to the streets with Finner to get a first-hand look at the so-called hot spots plaguing the neighborhood.

“Our hope and desire is that the new administration continues with a strong community engagement component,” Evans-Brooks said.

From the Third Ward to Asia Town, Finner’s commitment to community policing is what those who call Houston home say they want to see in the city’s next public safety leader.

“You don’t want someone who really doesn’t know how to make all the decisions for something they don’t know anything about,” Joiner said.

“We encourage them not to overlook the voices of community organizations, activists and community members, as we are a tremendous resource and partner to help keep communities safe and alleviate issues that could potentially be exacerbated said Evans-Brooks.

It’s not yet clear who will replace Finner, but residents said they hope it’s someone with local ties to the area who understands the needs of the communities they will serve.

Larry Satterwhite, who previously served the department as executive deputy chief, will serve as interim police chief until a new chief is selected.
