Weather Alert Day – Thursday afternoon

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

Rain showers and storms will move into our area on Thursday, coupled with a cold front crossing through Thursday evening. Well before the front arrives, there could be morning showers hitting some areas before sunrise. These should not be serious. These showers will fade away and we will experience a relatively calm (but still HOT) afternoon with highs reaching into the 90s. This will be a record-breaking challenge as Meridian’s record high temperature is 92 degrees on Thursday. Regardless, heat indicators will be back at 100 degrees during the afternoon heat…so continue to practice heat safety: https://www.weather.gov/grb/heat

FIRST ALERT

The cold front will begin crossing our area after 4:00 p.m. and its presence will help trigger showers and storms. There will be atmospheric elements that support the growth of storms…perhaps to the point where these storms reach severe limits. The main threat is damaging wind, with gusts of over 110 km/h also possible. This type of wind can cause tornado-like damage. Therefore, it is best to secure any loose garden items outside your property before these storms invade. Hail is also possible…along with tornadoes (although this is the least threat, but not). zero). So get your severe weather plan in order and make sure you have multiple opportunities to receive severe weather warnings between 4 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday. Behind this system, prepare for a very cozy Friday and Mother’s Day weekend! The dew points will drop, so it won’t be as humid anymore. In addition, temperatures will drop back to average or slightly below normal. Sunshine will return and last for most of the weekend. However, additional clouds are possible on Mother’s Day… ahead of our next system, which will bring us some showers through Monday.
