Surf legend and “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Tamayo Perry killed in shark attack in Hawaii

Surfing legend Tamayo Perry has died after a shark attack on Oahu, Hawaii.

Perry, who appeared in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, was attacked near Goat Island on Sunday. He was 49 years old.

He was found off Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s north shore by local surfers missing an arm and a leg, Stab Magazine reported.

The horrific incident was reported by a passerby who observed a man being bitten by a shark, Honolulu emergency services said.

Perry was taking a break from his lifeguard duties when the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. local time.

Rescue workers brought Perry ashore at Malaekahana Beach, where paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.

But Perry – a lifeguard and surf instructor with Ocean Safety – was pronounced dead just moments later, officials said.

Following the fatal attack, Ocean Safety staff have issued shark warnings in the area.

“He is very well known on the North Shore. He is a world-renowned professional surfer,” said Kurt Lager, acting director of Honolulu Ocean Safety.

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more,” he said, adding that Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all.”

“Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected fisherman,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, calling Perry’s death “a tragic loss.”

Perry, who was working as a lifeguard on the North Shore at the time of his death, began his career with the Department of Marine Safety in 2016.

Perry previously appeared in a number of blockbuster films, including “Blue Crush” (2002), “Lost,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hawaii Five-0.”

He also appeared in the 2003 film “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”.

Born in 1975, the Hawaiian native began surfing at the age of 12 and soon made a name for himself as “an up-and-coming local boy who had to borrow surfboards because he had no sponsors,” according to The Encyclopedia of Surfing.

“By 1997, the wiry goofy-footer had come a long way in developing a tube-riding style that combined characteristics of Gerry Lopez and Tom Carroll, his two favorite old-school pipeline surfers.”

Two years later, Perry won the Pipeline Masters, an annual surfing competition on Oahu.

In 2005, he was widely considered one of the most famous surfers in the region.

Perry’s death is the second fatal shark attack on Oahu this month.
