New swimming pool named in honor of teenager killed in accident | The Bulldog 103.9 FM | 103.9 The Bulldog

A new swimming pool has now opened at Breaks Interstate Park and the concession area was named in honor of an Elkhorn City youth who worked there and died a few days before the pool opened.

The Appalachian News Express reports that the pool was funded with help from the Dickenson County Industrial Development and Economic Authority, the Abandoned Mine Lands AMBLER program, the Virginia Department of Energy and others.

The property is named after 17-year-old Zena Newsome, who worked at the water park complex and was killed in a traffic accident just before Memorial Day.

A memorial plaque was presented to Zena’s family in her honor.
