With Suraj Revanna’s custody in the sexual assault case, the entire Revanna family is now in legal trouble

Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) MLC Suraj Revanna was remanded in custody for 14 days on Sunday (June 23) after he was arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Karnataka Police is expected to seek his custody today. The next court hearing is scheduled for July 6.

Suraj Revanna, the son of HD Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was arrested on Saturday for sexually assaulting a male party worker. The charges against him include various sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as “unnatural offences”.

This arrest deepens the Revanna family’s legal woes. Suraj’s brother, Prajwal Revanna, is currently in police custody facing three rape charges. Prajwal, a former Hassan MP who lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is accused of sexually assaulting several women, including domestic helps and party workers.

Ahead of the elections, several explicit videos were released purporting to feature him. He is currently in the custody of a special investigation team tasked with investigating the allegations.

HD Revanna himself was arrested earlier for allegedly kidnapping a sexual abuse victim to prevent her from testifying against Prajwal. He is currently out on bail while his wife Bhavani Revanna recently obtained interim bail in the Karnataka High Court in the same case.

Suraj Revanna, who has so far refused to interfere in his brother’s legal battles, is now facing allegations of his own. Suraj began his political career by campaigning for his father in the 2013 assembly elections and became a popular figure in the villages of Holenarasipur and Channarayapatna.

After completing his postgraduate studies in General Surgery in 2015, he officially entered active politics and was elected MLC in 2021.

Despite his growing popularity, Suraj’s political journey has not been without controversy. His affidavit for the 2021 MLC elections revealed that his name was removed from two police cases in Hassan district and a B report was filed in another case, highlighting the family’s political influence. Suraj has also faced criticism for not revealing details of his marriage in his affidavit for the 2021 elections, leading to a petition alleging suppression of facts.
