Priest suspended for sexual misconduct, no minors involved

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — In a press release, Bishop Edgar da Cunha, SDV of Fall River, said the Rev. Jay Mello was placed on leave after the diocese received information about sexual misconduct by Father Jay Mello.

The press release continued: “It is important to note that there are no allegations of inappropriate behavior toward minors.”

The diocese said it would use the information received to investigate whether Father Mello had violated the code of conduct for priests.

While the investigation continues, Father Mello has been placed on leave.

He no longer lives in the rectory of St. Michael and St. Joseph parishes and has been forbidden to exercise his priestly office publicly.

The press release goes on to say that Pastor Mello has denied these allegations.

Bishop Cuhna said they are working to find a temporary pastor for St. Michael and St. Joseph churches.

The current mass schedules of both churches remain unaffected.
