Prisoner sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder of prisoner who raped his sister

A man was sentenced to an additional 25 years in prison after killing his cellmate who was convicted of raping his younger sister.

Last year, 26-year-old Shane Goldsby fatally beat his cellmate Robert Munger, 70, at the Airway Heights Corrections Center in Washington state.

Munger was a convicted child rapist, one of whose victims was Goldsby’s sister. He was sentenced to 43 years in prison and charged with child molestation and possession of child pornography.

In 2020, Goldsby punched Munger in the face 14 times and stomped on his face, then kicked him in a common area of ​​the prison, KHQ-TV reported.

Munger died three days after the attack.

Goldsby was serving time in prison after being found guilty of stabbing someone, stealing a police car and injuring a police officer. He received nearly 25 additional years for Munger’s death.

Before his sentence was announced, Goldsby read a statement in court, but he was so overwhelmed that his lawyer had to finish reading it.

“I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose a loved one in this way,” the statement said.

“I apologize to his wife and his entire family. I am so sorry and I hope you can handle what I have caused.”

According to a 2020 Associated Press article, after learning who Munger was, Goldsby requested a different cellmate, but the cellmate ignored his request.

“So much was going through my mind,” he said in an interview with KHQ-TV last year.

“I was not stable at that point. I wasn’t. I got to that point because (Munger) kept trying to give me details about what happened, what he did – about the photos and videos of him doing these things. It was piling up.”

He claims he never intended to kill Munger and says he would have preferred to see his sister’s rapist in prison for the rest of his life.
