‘Can’t comprehend it,’ says family after BTech graduate from Andhra shot dead in Dallas shop | India News

For family members of 32-year-old Dasari Gopikrishna, it has been a struggle to come to terms with the young father’s murder. Some of them had inadvertently seen a surveillance camera video clip circulating on social media showing him being shot dead in a supermarket in the United States.

Gopikrisha had left Yajali village in Bapatla district of Andhra Pradesh for Dallas, Texas, just eight months ago to look for work. However, the BTech graduate was unable to find a suitable job and started working part-time at a supermarket.

Late on Friday night, a man entered the shop and opened fire at Gopikrisha, who was standing behind the counter. The man stole some cash and other items and disappeared. The incident was recorded on a CCTV camera.

“He had come to the US to find work so that his family could have a better life here… We cannot understand how his life was snuffed out in cold blood,” said 54-year-old D Srinivas, who sold his 1-acre field to finance his son’s trip to the US.

Gopikrishna got married three years ago and had a one-year-old son.

Festive offer

“He wanted to settle down and make a good life for himself so he could provide a better life for his wife and son,” Srinivas said.

Gopikrishna had completed his Bachelor of Technology from Bapatla Engineering College seven years ago. Before moving to the US, he worked as a software developer for a company based in Hyderabad.

“His friends in the US, especially two of them living in Texas, had advised him not to go now as the employment situation there was not good. They said they would tell him when the situation was better, but he decided to go anyway,” said G Suresh, a childhood friend and neighbour.

“His wife also has a Bachelor of Technology degree. He thought that if he finds a suitable job, she could also come to work with him and both of them could work there and have a better life,” said Suresh.

“His wife went to the temple every day and prayed that he would find a suitable job. He was happy when he found work in the supermarket. He called me every week and said something was better than nothing and that he would find a better job soon,” Suresh added.

He was shot late Friday evening and taken to hospital, where he died ten hours later.

Some members of his family had even seen the video of the shooting on social media without realizing it was him.
