SLED investigates death in custody at Al Cannon Detention Center

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement has been tasked with investigating after an inmate was found unconscious at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

Officers were called to the Charleston County Detention Center on Leeds Avenue around 2 p.m. Sunday for reports of a suspected suicide, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lexi Douglas said.

Detention center officials found an unconscious man who was not breathing. Officers, medical personnel, North Charleston Fire Department personnel and EMS attempted to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the inmate’s name.

Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano has assigned SLED to investigate.

In addition to SLED investigations, the Office of Professional Standards at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office conducts an internal review as a standard practice.
