Search for missing swimmer off Newport’s Ocean Drive called off

Authorities have suspended their search for a 20-year-old man who went missing in the waters off Newport’s Ocean Drive near 12 O’Clock High on Sunday evening. The search and rescue operation, which involved multiple agencies, will resume as a recovery operation at sunrise on Monday.

The young man disappeared shortly after 5 p.m., sparking a large-scale response by Newport, Middletown and Jamestown authorities, as well as the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the U.S. Coast Guard. In the coordinated operation, helicopters, boats and lifeguards searched the area in hopes of finding the missing swimmer.

Despite all efforts, authorities were unable to locate the man before nightfall. Given the difficult conditions and dwindling daylight, it was decided to call off the search for the evening.

The identity of the missing man has not been disclosed.
