Toronto Blue Jays prospect and rising infielder Orelvis Martinez has had his major league dreams put on hold just two days after his highly anticipated debut. Major League Baseball has suspended Martinez for 80 games after he tested positive for a banned substance.

The suspension was announced on social media on Sunday after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug clomiphene. Martinez then released a statement through the MLB Players Association, explaining that he took the drug as part of his efforts to start a family.

“I have been trying to start a family with my girlfriend for two years. During the off-season, we visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and after laboratory tests, we were prescribed a treatment that included a drug called Rejun 50,” Martinez wrote. “Unfortunately, Rejun 50 contains a banned substance called clomiphene.”

“We also wanted to keep this matter private within our family and trusted the doctor who assured us that this treatment did not involve any performance-enhancing drugs. Therefore, I made the mistake of not communicating this to my team or the MLBPΑ. With this in mind, I took full responsibility for my actions and accepted my suspension.

“I want to apologize to my teammates in Buffalo and Toronto, the Blue Jays organization and most importantly, the fans who have supported me throughout my career,” he continued. “I will learn from this experience and return to the field in September.”
