We were not suspended by Olufi of Gbongan — Monarchs of Osun

Afolabi Kazeem Adekunle, a traditional chief and Baale of Onpetu/Oluoje in Gbongan community in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, has dismissed as untrue claims circulating in some quarters that he and two other title holders of the settlement have been suspended by the traditional ruler of the town, Olufi of Gbongan, Oba Adetoyese Oyeniyi Odugbemi.

Chief Adekunle, at a press conference held in the city over the weekend, described the claim as rumour and lie, arguing that the claim came from their critics and that he was now using the opportunity to tell them that he was still Onpetu/Oluoje and the real chief of Oba Odugbemi.

According to him, “I became the Onpetu/Oluoje of Gbongan by their unanimous decision which led to my installation as Onpetu in 2019. For this reason, I will remain the Onpetu of Gbongan unless the descendants of Oluoje declare that I am no longer their chief.”

“I am a gentleman, a law-abiding citizen, I love peace and I do not stir up trouble. Therefore, I am not in any way disturbed by the alleged suspension. I have done nothing wrong or violated the law of the land that would justify this.

“I have always given due respect and honour to our father, the Olufi of Gbongan, but this development surprises me because I have no grudges against our babies. Baba is my father.”

Chief Adekunle said his alleged suspension, along with the suspension of the other two Baales, was the result of a letter written by descendants of the Oluoje and addressed to the monarch through the Ayedaade Local Government Traditional Council, calling for the elevation of Onpetu Oluoje to the second part of the status.

However, the Onpetu/Oluoje, the Baales and representatives of the eleven houses of the “Oluoje descendants” in Gbongan rejected the allegations and described their alleged suspension as baseless, null and void.

together with the other two village heads (Baales), Baale Rufai Lawal of Olubula community and Baale Samson Oyegunle Odekunmi of Sewe community in Gbongan town, Onpetu, said their alleged suspension was without merit.
