Mechanicsville man arrested for assaulting woman; charged with attempted murder

LEXINGTON PARK, Maryland. – On the evening of June 22, 2024, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division responded to a reported assault in the 45000 block of Nicholas Court in Lexington Park, MD.

Officers spoke with the victim, who advised that she was going to meet her ex-husband, John William Alvarado, 47, of Mechanicsville, MD. As the victim approached the suspect, Alvarado exited his vehicle, pointed a loaded handgun at the victim, and struck her multiple times with the handgun. Alvarado then fired the handgun twice and fled the scene.

The victim was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Criminal Investigation officers continued their investigation and the subsequent investigation revealed that Alvarado had previously been convicted of a crime that prevented him from possessing firearms.

On June 23, 2024, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Alvarado. Investigators received information that Alvarado was in the Leonardtown area and with the assistance of officers from the patrol division, a traffic stop was conducted during which the suspect was taken into custody and the warrant was executed charging him with the following:

  • Attempted premeditated murder
  • Attempted second degree murder
  • First degree assault
  • Second degree assault
  • Use of firearms during the commission of a violent crime
  • Regulated illegal possession of weapons
  • Loaded gun on person
  • Loaded pistol in vehicle
  • Reckless endangerment and related charges.

Alvarado is currently being held at the Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, MD.
