13-year-old girl sexually abused by three family members for two years; father and uncle arrested | News from Pune

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped and sexually abused by her father, uncle and an older cousin for the past two years. The girl recently opened up about it in a group counselling session at her school, Pune police said. The father and uncle, both in their 40s, and the cousin, who is in his early twenties, have been arrested.

Based on a complaint from the 13-year-old girl, a complaint was filed in the case at a police station under the jurisdiction of Pune city on Saturday. “The girl confided in her teachers at school after a group counselling session was held to educate them about good and bad touch and other concepts to protect children from sexual offences. The girl spoke about the sexual abuse and rape by three members of her family. The case was subsequently reported to the police and a complaint was filed. The three accused – the father and uncle – who are in their 40s and the cousin, who is in his early 20s, were arrested. They have been remanded in custody,” said a senior Pune police officer.

It is alleged that the girl was abused by the suspects on several occasions between July 2022 and June 2024. The official added, “The girl is being provided with all necessary psychological support and the case is being monitored by the senior officials.”

An investigation suggests that the cousin raped her sometime in July 2022 when the two were in another room of the house. She was allegedly raped by her uncle in January 2024 and sexually abused by her father multiple times over a long period of time. These suspects also beat her and threatened her with dire circumstances if she spoke about it to anyone, an official said.

The police invoked various sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to rape, criminal intimidation and assault, as well as provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO).
