Forest Service issues closure orders due to incidents in Plumas National Forest | News

PLUMAS COUNTY, California. – Due to the Rainbow Family’s code violations and unauthorized non-commercial group use, the Plumas National Forest is holding a virtual public meeting on Tuesday to inform the public of the incident and upcoming closures.

The Forest Service said the Rainbow Family set up camp in the Plumas National Forest on Monday afternoon and within a few days their numbers exceeded the limit allowed without a permit.

The Rainbow Family does not have a special permit to accommodate more than 75 people on its premises, in violation of Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

For reasons of public safety and to protect natural resources, the Forestry Administration has issued two closure orders.

  • Forest Order 05-11-02-24-01: restricts traffic on Forest Road 28N15 to one-way traffic to manage traffic flow and ensure the road is open during the Rainbow Family’s stay. In addition, Forest Roads 28N15A and 28N15B will be closed at the base of Red Peak.

  • Forest Ordinance 05-11-02-24-02: prohibits parking and parking of cars in designated areas on the forest road 28N15 in order to ensure entry and exit to the area for public and emergency vehicles and to protect the natural resources in the area

Anyone who violates these closure orders may be fined more than $5,000 (individuals) and $10,000 (organizations), imprisoned for a maximum of six months, or both.
