Max Fried starts Sunday as the Braves look to get back in the win column against the Yankees

After seeing their winning streak end on Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will look to get back in the win column on Sunday when they conclude a three-game series against the New York Yankees. Atlanta won the first game Friday by a score of 8-1, but fell early Saturday in an 8-3 loss. Max Fried will start for the Braves on Sunday while the Yankees will opt for left-hander Nestor Cortes.

Fried has been excellent since two rough outings to start the season, posting a 2.16 ERA and 3.18 FIP over his last 12 starts and 79 innings. He allowed one run and struck out six in 5 13 innings in his last start against Detroit. Fried has a 2.25 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees. Sunday will be his first career start at Yankee Stadium.

Injuries limited Nestor Cortes to just 12 starts last season, but he recovered and pitched well for the Yankees in 2024. He is coming off a strong start against the Orioles where he struck out six in six innings without aim. Cortes has allowed a total of two runs over his last 13 innings. Sunday will be his first career start against the Braves.

Atlanta managed just four hits in Saturday’s loss. Two of those hits were home runs by Marcell Ozuna and Travis d’Arnaud. The Braves are tied for 12th in the majors with 84 home runs for the season.

Austin Riley finished 1-for-4 in Saturday’s loss, but is 13-for-26 with four doubles and four home runs over his last eight games. Jarred Kelenic extended his hitting streak to nine straight games with a double in the eighth inning. Kelenic is hitting .290/.343/.500 with a 136 wRC+ in June.

Although the Braves have seen an uptick offensively in recent days, that hasn’t extended to shortstop Orlando Arcia, who remains in a deep slump. Arcia struck out in his three plate appearances Saturday night. He is 10-for-68 with 18 strikeouts in 19 games in June. Since May 1, Arcia is hitting .171/.206/.293 with a 36 wRC+ in 175 plate appearances.

Adam Duvall was out of the lineup for Saturday’s game and also went down. Duvall has just nine hits in 66 at-bats since the start of June and has struck out 22. Most of Duvall’s struggles have come against right-handed pitchers against whom he hits .096 in 98 plate appearances. He performed well against southpaws producing a 160 wRC+ and should be back in the lineup on Sunday against the southpaw Cortes.

First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
